Curiously, The Only One Intense doesn’t really strike me as an intense version of The Only One. Like its powdery-sweet predecessor bares no resemblance to ambery vanilla-floral The One, The Only One Intense is so different from its pillar it almost might have been launched under its own name (The Next One? The Dark One? – uh, that would sound more like a villain than a perfume)… Anyway.

Still, this is surely better than yawning at another near-identical flanker. The Only One Intense does have the plus of feeling unique(ish), and standing in Dolce&Gabbana’s lineup with its own character.

On the other hand… I’m not really swooning over it, myself.

Created by perfumer Violaine Collas and released in early 2020, The Only One Intense is indeed a deep, intense scent – which matches its beautiful black bottle. This fragrance has a certain resemblance to The Only One in the general woody-fuzzy-sweet effect its sillage creates… still, big differences set them apart.

While The Only One smells gourmand, with berry marshmallow top notes, coffee & vanilla-tinged heart, and a caramel-y finish, The Only One Intense is a sweet yet non-coffee-shop-evoking woody floral. It opens with soapy-powdery neroli, quickly followed by the heart & base notes. No velvety roses & violets this time, as The Only One Intense presents a bouquet of (very bubblegum-y) orange blossoms, then bright jasmine, its high-pitch whiteness balanced by dry, woody coconut. There’s no coffee listed in the notes, but I sometimes get a glipse of it; not enough to add a gourmand feel, just to echoe a bit of the original… Curiously, though, as this comes with white florals and cashmeran, the effect for me is closer to YSL Black Opium than to The Only One.

The base notes are maybe the most prominent ones in this composition, engulfing the bubblegum floral heart with a fuzzy, earthy-yet-lightweight mix of crisp cedar and cashmeran. I don’t get vanilla as much as an indistinct sweetness, which the woody base balances for an overall “dark” effect.

Conclusion

The Only One Intense brings a new character to its line, which is truly great for a flanker of a flanker! It also balances its sweetness with dark (yet pleasantly translucent) woody elements. I also really like the touch of dry, non-tropical coconut – it’s a non-obvious take on this note, and it helps rounding up and enriching the other accords.

On the other hand… the orange blossom note here strikes me as too artificial-smelling, almost plasticky – especially in the opening stage. The middle-drydown jasmine feels more floral, but I admit, this isn’t my favourite note, and I’m not a fan of the cedar-cashmeran fuzzy-raspy base, either… This is, however, mostly a matter of personal taste.

I wasn’t captivated by The Only One Intense, but I think it is a nice, pleasant and quite unique perfume, with a sense of depth and balanced sweetness. Personally, I’ll take the violet & caramel smoothness of The Only One over this version, but if you like woody-jasmine accords (and sugar-free coconut), you might love The Only One Intense!
